Portman2 is in beta. Features are still being added, nothing here should be taken as final, and things can change or be removed without notice.

Export photos resized, compressed or in another format

Export copies of photos and videos from Portman2: resize them, compress them for the web or email, or convert them to JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or TIFF.

Right-click a photo, or a selection, and choose Export…. It works from the grid, the viewer and popup windows, and from an album's own menu in the sidebar. Export only ever writes copies: the photos in your library are not changed, renamed or moved.

Presets

The first row of the dialog is a list of presets, each a whole set of choices with a name:

  • Full quality — the same format and size as the original, with everything kept. A photo that would come out unchanged is copied byte for byte, so nothing is lost.
  • Web 2048 px JPEG 85 — a JPEG no more than 2048 pixels on its long edge, at quality 85, with the location taken out.
  • Email 1600 px — a smaller JPEG for sending, also without the location.

Change anything and press Save as preset… to keep your own under a name; pick one of your own and Delete preset removes it. The first export opens on Full quality; after that the dialog opens on whatever you exported with last, and in the folder you exported to last.

What you can choose

  • Where — a folder, chosen with Choose folder…. For one photo, Save as… lets you name the file too. An album can be exported into a folder of its own name.
  • Format — the same as the original, JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or TIFF. A RAW photo exported as Same as original is copied as the RAW file it is; in any other format it is exported as it looks in Portman2.
  • Quality or compression — quality from 1 to 100 for JPEG, WebP and AVIF; how hard a PNG is squeezed (it never changes a pixel); and none, LZW or ZIP for TIFF.
  • Size — the original size, a long edge in pixels, a box to fit within, or a percentage. Never enlarge is on, so a photo smaller than the size you ask for keeps its own.
  • Version — for edited photos: the edit, as the tile shows it, or the original from before editing.
  • Metadata — keep it all, remove the location, or remove all of it. The date the photo was taken is kept unless you remove all.
  • Colour — Convert to sRGB is on, since an exported photo is usually looked at on a phone or a web page that assumes sRGB.
  • Names — keep each file's name, or build names from a pattern like {date} {n}. It is the same pattern as batch rename: {n} counts through the selection in date order, and the date tokens, {stem} and {tags} work the same. The extension is the format's.
  • When a name is taken in the folder — number the copy name (2), overwrite the file that is there, or skip the photo.

As you choose, the dialog shows roughly how big the export will be, worked out by exporting the first photo for real and measuring it. Every photo is turned the right way up in its pixels, so no other program can show it on its side.

Virtual copies and videos

A virtual copy has no file of its own, but it exports: its look is rendered into a real picture, so Export is how you get a virtual copy out of Portman2.

When the selection holds videos, the dialog has a video row too: Copy as is writes each video unchanged, and Re-encode writes it as an mp4 with the same choices as converting videos — format, quality and maximum resolution.

While it runs

The export runs in the background with a notice showing the photo being written and how far it has got, with Stop. Stopping keeps what has been written and starts nothing more. The notice says where the files went, and how many were skipped or could not be exported.
