Windows will warn you about this installer
It will, and it is worth knowing before it happens rather than after. When you run the installer, Windows is likely to stop it with a blue window headed "Windows protected your PC", tell you that Microsoft Defender SmartScreen has prevented an unrecognised app from starting, and offer you a single button that says don't run it. Your browser may say something similar while the file is still arriving.
That warning is not about what is in the file. It is about the file having no code-signing certificate on it: Portman2's installer is not signed, so Windows has no publisher name to show you and no history of this file to go on — and an application it has never seen before, with no signature on it at all, is exactly the case that panel exists for. It says the same thing about every unsigned installer, including the harmless ones.
To go ahead anyway: choose "More info" in that window — which is where it shows the publisher as unknown — and then "Run anyway". If you would rather not take the software's word for any of this, check the checksum below first; that is what it is published for.
Checking the file you got is the file we published
The SHA-256 above is this exact installer's. Run the line below in PowerShell against the file you downloaded and compare the two: if they match, the bytes on your disk are the bytes on this server, and nothing altered them on the way. If they do not match, do not run it.
The server publishes the same number on the download itself, in an X-Portman-Sha256 header, and both come from the one row in the release table this page is reading — so this is a check with something behind it rather than a number printed beside a file.

What changed in this build
Edit your videos as easily as your photos, free up disk space, and give one photo's look to fifty others.
- Trim and cut videos: choose Edit… on a video to keep only the part you want.
- Colour grade a video the way you edit a photo: adjust one frame and the whole clip follows.
- Find the videos taking up the most space and compress them to a fraction of the size.
- Join video clips into one.
- Make a second version of a video, to cut, grade and convert one clip several ways from the same original.
- Portman2 keeps the original of every video it changes, so you can go back, or delete the original once you are happy and get the space back.
- Copy one photo's edits and paste them onto as many others as you like.
- Back up your photo library, with a reminder when the last backup is more than a week old.
- Right-click any photo and choose Go to the day to see everything else from that day.
- The new Screens Overview shows every screen in a 3D room, each showing what it is actually showing.
- When you import, the library's own tags are offered as you type.
- File imports into a folder per tag: a library's folders can be
{tag}\{year}, with untagged photos kept together inUntagged. - Rename photos one at a time or in a batch with a pattern like
{date} {n}, re-file them into the library's own folders, or move them out of the library — albums, tags and edits go with them. - Enlarge a low-resolution photo 2× or 4× and clean up its noise and JPEG blocks, all on your own computer: preview it beside the original, then save it as a new photo.
- Export photos resized, compressed for the web or email, or as JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or TIFF — from a selection or a whole album, with presets, and virtual copies too.
- Copy a photo's full path from its menu.
- Press
F1to see the keyboard shortcuts for where you are, and pressEnteron that card, orShift+F1anywhere, to open the help page for it.
And fixes you may notice:
- After sleep, or when a display is plugged in or out, the window carries on drawing instead of freezing on a broken picture.
- On a large library, the search box's suggestions come up as you type instead of after several seconds, and picking a two-word keyword no longer leaves a stray word behind.
- Photos imported on another computer that cannot hand them over are found in the shared folder, and a notice says what is happening, with Scan now.
- With Fade on, a screen starts fading at once and fades smoothly, even on a 4K monitor.
- When you borrow another computer's screen, its Allow once prompt comes up there straight away.
